2009 Class History

By Olivia Wandelear

MARCH 18,2008

SOUTHBRIDGE - An extremely
wise actor of our time once
said, "I get older; they stay the
same age..." Despite Matthew
McConaughey's genius

conviction, we, the Southbridge
High School class of 2009,
startlingly and swiftly grew up
and certainly matured much
sooner than any one of us had
expected to.

We over-confidently
stepped foot into Southbridge
High during August of 2005 as
one of the worst behaved classes
SHS had seen in awhile. Proudly
calling ourselves the fundamental
reason for Freshman Academy's
installment the following year,
we spent much of our freshman
year securing our legendary
spot in SHS history in any way
we could. Freshman elections
quickly approached in September
and while Rafy Medina made us
all laugh with his hysterically
apathetic campaign for Vice
President, we appointed Jason
Houatchanthara as President,
Christine Gonzales as Vice
President, Matt Losavio as
Treasurer and, in our freshman
wisdom, Jeff Frechette and
Brendan Morrill as Secretary.
Complications arose, about
two weeks before the holiday,
when our brand new advisors,
Miss Kranz and Miss Pond,
were notified of our first
official business as a class, the
Thanksgiving Day Rally skit and
poster contest. The year's theme
was "Safari," and, sticking to a
freshman tradition, we miserably
fell flat on our faces in front of
the entire school during a skit
that was supposed to resemble
Fear Factor. A group of us
wielded cardboard props and ate
heaping plates of cold spaghetti
on the cheerleading mats nearly
ruining them. Though our very
own Nate Power was chosen as
Miss Turkey, making us all oddly
proud, we earned ourselves last
place in nearly every category of
the day and went home even more
embarrassed than we thought

possible. The rest of our first year
of high school flew by in a blur full
of failed attempts at fundraisers
and serious lack of confidence and
maturity. We ended the year with
a whopping -$400 to pay for the
many expenses coming our way.

Many hoped and
assumed our second year of high
school's arrival would indicate
slightly more success as a class.
They were mostly wrong. Though
we were granted a stellar new
advisor, Miss Stankus, our
negative attitude failed to diminish
no matter how many words of
encouragement we received.
Looking to finally turn things
around for the better, we appointed
Courtney Salmon as President,
Olivia Wandelear as Vice President,
Rafy Medina as Treasurer, until
he was kicked out of paint night
and replaced with Matt Losavio,
Jillian Gibeault as Secretary,
and Kristen Houtchanthara and
Katelynn Catsellani as Historian.
Lackluster participation due to
fear of embarrassment had most of
the class stuck in a spell of deja vu
by the time Thanksgiving rolled
around. The rally's theme that year
was "Las Vegas" and after many
ridiculous arguments over our
skit, we chose CSI. A completely
random group of sophomores spent
a week writing and perfecting the
worst episode of CSI imaginable
that included an Indian and a
lawnmower, but, unfortunately,
lacked a point. No one in the class
will forget that while our skit was
being performed, we actually hid
behind our gorgeous first place
poster drawn by Katie, Jeff, and
Brendan.

Despite our utter embarrassment
over the rally, we still had a
chance to redeem ourselves
funding-wise through the annual
Spring Semi-Formal. Though
Matt made a great argument for
calling the dance "Smack That,"
the rest of the committee chose
a midnight garden-inspired
theme that included Miss Pond's
homemade chandeliers and about
a thousand balloons. The semi

was a success and we thankfully
ended sophomore year with
funds above $0 that were to be
used to pay for the lavish prom
we needed to start planning.

We proved the cliche
saying "third time's a charm"
when we finally reentered SHS
as upperclassmen in 2007. We
initially expected the year to
begin wonderfully, until we were
notified that we would be buying
entirely new hoodless wardrobes
thanks to the newly implemented
ban. Along with these changes,
Miss. Stankus became a Haire
and Mrs. Bussiere hopped in
to replace Miss Pond. With "B
and Haire's" help, the Class of
2009's third year of high school
was our best one yet. A great
fundraiser suggested by Mrs.
B at the beginning of the year
supplied all of the funding we
needed to pay for our prom. Led
by President Veronica Carillo,
Vice President Margaita Veras,
and returning officers Treasurer
Matt Losavio, Secretary Jillian
Gibeault, and Historian Kate
Castellani, we finally grew up.
Sick of embarrassment in the
fall and disappointment in the
spring, we decided it was time to
pull together as a class to secure
that legendary spot in history
before it was too late. Coming
through with the promise they
made the previous year, the
football players actually made a
surprise appearance for the first
time ever in our Thanksgiving
skits. Student Council chose
"Dancing Through the Decades"
as the theme and we unanimously
voted to create our own version
of Grease decked out in poodle
skirts and 50's style cheerleading
uniforms. We performed the
hand-jive out on the field during
our second bonfire. Meagan and
Kate choreographed a stellar
dance routine while football and
soccer players donned painfully
tight girl's skinny jeans as the
Indians and T-Birds. Paired
with human bowling pins and
yet another beautiful poster,
we were certainly robbed of
first place. Despite this slight
disappointment, our spirits were
still high as spring approached

and prom rolled around. Our
"Bella Notte," an italian inspired
and themed affair was a huge
success, despite Matt again
nominating "Smack That" as the
name. For the first time ever, we
ended a year on a fantastic note,
anxiously waiting the year to
come.

The summer between
Junior and Senior year was
plagued with about twenty-five
pounds of mail for each one of
us that urged choosing a college
immediately. We were sorely
mistaken when we assumed
senior year would be a walk in the
park. For the first three months
of school, SAT's and college
applications consumed most
of our time. After contracting
Senioritis, we were beginning to
wonder if June would ever come.
With elected officers Victor
Martinez as President, Margarita
Veras as Vice President, Matt
Losavio as Treasurer, Katelynn
Castellani as Secretary and
Meagan Quigley as Historian,
the year flew by quicker than we
had expected it to. In true Senior
tradition, when Thanksgiving
came around, we took first placed
in all of the events during Spirit
Week. The rally's premise was
"Disney" and we appropriately
chose The Lion King as our award
winning theme. The boys had
the entire school laughing with
their extravagant choreography
to "Man, I Feel Like a Woman."
After college deadlines came
and went, scholarship deadlines
approached and we were well into
spring. After our last prom, we
looked forward to our extremely
exciting and lengthy day trip as
a class to Six Flags for our last
rendezvous together.

As June approaches,
Graduation looms closer and
closer as we prepare to break
free from the high school circuit
and embark on our journeys as
independent men and women.
Leaving SHS will be hard for
some, but knowing we ultimately
left our footprints in the sand of
successful high school history
will ease that pain. We leave
behind our legacy...

in your future."

I'll never forget when: we were fresh-
men and the worst class in SHS.We
made the Freshman Academy, but we
still made it!!

Advice to freshmen: Don't slack off, and
remember friends come and go.

Goals: Take care of little kids and get
lots of money!

In the end,
it's not the
years in
your life that
count; it's
the life in
your years.

I never thought my high school
years would fly by this fast, it
took a lot of hard work and
dedication, but in the end it was
all worth it. My teachers and
guidance counselors helped me
along the way, and I can't thanK
them enough- But, high school is
nothing without friends. They've
been there for me through
everything and guided me to the
right path.

I'll never forget what I've learned
at £outhbridge Higfr^^^^^
I've learned a lot about myself
and who I am as an individual.
To all the underclassmen in the
future years-. There's a big world
out there, bigger than prom, big-
ger than high school, and it won't
matter if you were the prom
queen or the quarterback of the
football team, or even the bigges-
nerd. Find out who you are and
try not to be afraid of it.

Success

To laugh often and much;

To win the respect of
intelligent people and the

affection of children;

To earn the appreciation of

To appreciate beauty, to find

To know even one life has

This is to have succeeded.

PROPHECY ^

It is May 2029. The class of 2009 gathers in Genoa, Italy, for the launching of a new fleet of
Pioneer cruise ships designed by Brendan Morrill and owned by Jeff Frechette. Brendan has invited
the class of 2009 to join him on the Pioneer 9's maiden voyage. Co-captains Enid Melendez and
Christian Lavallee and their crew which, included Nora Escobar and Johannys Morales, welcome the
members of the class of 2009 as they assemble to christen the ship. Special guest, former Principal
Mr. William Bishop performs the opening ceremony. Former members of the Southbridge High Band-
Cindy Barrios, Courtney Salmon, and Matthew Thomas Earl Losavio, and the conductor of the Boston
Symphony Orchestra, Kristen Houatchanthara — provide the celebratory fanfare while the champagne
is smashed against the hull. W

Among the alumni boarding the ship are a number of celebrities. First to arrive is Dariana Orta the
star of a new talk show "Orta" accompanied by her producer Kayla Lopez. "So You Think You Can
Dance" champion Kelvin Maldonado prances in with American Idol finalist Debora Rivera and
runner-up Christine Gonzalez. Walking in behind them are Thomas Joyce III, who miraculously
discovered the cure for AIDS, and Katie Mrazik, owner of a clothing line primarily made of bright
pants. The wrestling master Kevin Quinn strolls in and immediately greets his old friend, Jason
Houatchanthara. Jason never did pursue hismedical career, but owns a very successful joke shop.
These members and many more arrive and take a seat in the ceremonial dining h

seat in the ceremonial dining hall.

or. Hi

The reunion commences with the opening remarks given by Victor Martinez, our senior class president
and now an Army General. He welcomes the first guest speaker, Katelynn Caste Hani, a notable
engineer. Katelynn speaks of how she aided Brendan with the mathematical calculations needed
to construct the ship. Jose DeLeon dribbles his basketball up to the podium and talks about his
experiences on the Boston Celtics Team. Renowned chefs, Dores Bounphasaysonh, Reeya Thorn,
and Margaret Jubin, serve the Captain's meal. The class eats a nostalgic chicken tender dinner before
the dancing begins. The food was delicious, but as usual Alii, the radiologist complains of "problems
because the salad was coated with Italian dressing. Jordan Garcia puts his DJ skills to work and
Angel Santiago leads the procession of people boogying on the dance floor. Meanwhile, Meag
Quigley roams around the floor trying to sell her new clothing line. feag£$

Suddenly, the ship lurches to a halt. The co-pilot of the ship, Christian Lavallee, signals a eft red
hip is being hijacked by a group of Somalian pirates." Omer Rafiq, the leader of the pirates,
mpanicd by Jordy Garcia, Gio Pena, Danny Mercado, and Angel Colon, are scaling the starboard
iide. The mood turns from calmness to calamity. As per her usual, Christine Gonzalez screams and
frightens poor Yahaira Medina. Ever the hippy, Amanda Stratton tries to bring peace on the ship by
reciting the Peace Builder pledge from elementary school.

i

Old f m. Nate Power, the master delivery man, Cody Lamay, tutor at Sylvan Learning Center, and
Tyler Ramsey, the New Engalnd Patriots star quarterback unite to save the day. They rip off their
suits ; d prepare to fight in their speedos. Rafael Medina and T-Stark, aka Tyler Stark, a new pop
singei return from a joy ride on a boat with T-pain. To their surprise, the ship is under attack. Rafy,
a chemical engineer, quickly creates a super-sonic, quantum de-coherent air propulsion machine.
Jeffrey Latour, Joe Paul, Scott Lynch, and Bobby Cusson, experienced members of a secret SWAT
team, rush the Somalians to distract them while Rafy uses his device to render the pirates immobile.
While the rest of the pirates are defeated, Omer Rafiq makes a last ditch effort to escape by detonating

a small bomb. The explosion fills the air with smoke concealing Omer leaving in his ecscape boat.
The bomb unintentionally makes a hole in the ship's hull. Captain Enid rushes to the Intercom and
announces "The boat is going down! We must all jump ship!" They evacuate the ship and board life
rafts. One raft is occupied by Margarita Veras, a probation officer; Janexia Rivera, an Air Force fighter
pilot; Veronica Carillo, a forensic scientist; and Iris Gonazalez a veterinarian. They paddle around
swiftly rescuing other members of the class not yet in a life boat.

They pick up Olivia Wandelear, a journalist for the Boston Globe, Iesha Loconto, a nurse at Boston
Children's Hospital; and Cassie Comtois, coroner. A different boat filled with Jillian Gibeault, a
marine biologist; Corinne Jourdenais, a pharmaceutical technician; Jennifer Davison, a ER doctor; and
Shana Harvey, a survivalist, travel to the nearby island to set up triage.

k

At the island, they rendezvous with Marissa Brunell, the secretary of the new Southbridge High
School who is taking inventory of the supplies. Yashira Calimano, a bio-physicist, Jennifer Martinez,
a chiropractic technician, and Krysta Rivera, a treasure hunter, scour the beach for survivors.

As the rest of the passengers reach the island Kristian Rivera, host of America's Most Wanted; Nataly
Rodriguez, a politician; and Gina Sirivongxay, an archeologist, find Omer's getaway boat near a cove
down the beach. Alexandra Rodriguez, a theoretical physicist; Ashley Rupert, a photographer; and
Angel Vazquez, a world champion bowler, volunteer to find Omer. They travel through the complex
Celinette Ortiz, a professional tracker.

cove with the help of Q

meet up with another team consisting of Vontailin Rosario, a dentist; Alicia Rosado, an

Edwin Rivera, an accountant; Gina Vongrutsamy. The Hill's "Happy Trash Collector"; and
Rivera, a b-list actress, who have already taken up the task of finding Omer. They join
orc id eventually find a secret cave which shows evidence of human habitation. They travel into
the cave and spy Omer and Andrew Bcnoit conferring in a secret lair. Andrew spots them and calmly
explains that he is behind this entire "Scan-da-lisf ' scheme. They demand an explanation. Andrew
snaps belligerently to the team. "It's your own fault. Had you invited me to the reunion, I wouldn't
ave had to the crash the party!" Celinette, who was in charge of invitations said, "Hold on a minute!
's not our fault! The reason you didn't got an invitation was because when you defected from the Ik
nited States, you left no forwarding address. There was no way we could have invited you." Andrew
realizes that his actions were somewhat irrational and that maybehe did overreact. To make amends,
he invites the class of 2009 to remain on his private island until they are rescued.

As the class members was ashore, Marissa Brunell takes attendance. Olivia assures the group that
she will memorialize the event in a story she will write for the Globe. The Pioneeer 9's owner, Jeff
Frechette, contracts with Andrew, Brendan, and Katelyn to begin engineering the Pioneer 10 so that
the class could reunite in 2039 for another eventful voyage.
